Ireland Launches Lottery System To Reduce Patient Wait Times From Six Months To Three

DUBLIN — The Irish government has launched a national lottery system to reduce hospital waiting times, aiming to cut average delays from six months to three.

Officials at the Department of Health said the program will allocate appointment slots through a weekly digital draw.

The system will operate under the Health Service Executive (HSE), which already manages national waiting lists and patient scheduling.

Currently, hundreds of thousands of patients wait for care, and delays remain a persistent issue across the system.

Under the new plan, patients who opt in will receive a randomly assigned treatment date within a shorter time frame.

However, urgent cases will still follow standard clinical prioritization rules set by medical staff.

In addition, the government expects the lottery to improve fairness in access to care while reducing administrative workload.

Meanwhile, officials said the initiative supports existing reforms that target shorter wait times under national health strategies.

Doctors will continue to update availability data through the existing waiting time system, which provides estimated timelines for patients.

As a result, authorities believe the approach will stabilize queues and gradually bring waiting periods closer to national targets.
