Birmingham City Council Mandates Removal Of Footwear Prior To Entering To Chambers
BIRMINGHAM, England – Birmingham City Council this week introduced a footwear removal policy before entry to the Council House chambers in Victoria Square.
Council officials said the rule supports cultural respect standards during several interfaith meetings across the city.
Moreover, staff placed new storage shelves and numbered baskets near the main entrance on Monday morning.
According to Birmingham City Council, visitors now receive disposable shoe covers during crowded public sessions.
Meanwhile, Council Leader John Cotton said the policy helps maintain a cleaner and calmer meeting environment.
Several Labour councillors also supported the decision after discussions with representatives from Birmingham Central Mosque.
In addition, security officers now remind guests about the updated entry procedure before every committee session.
The council expects the measure to reduce cleaning costs inside the historic chamber building throughout the financial year.
However, some local residents questioned the policy on community forums linked through BBC Birmingham News.
Still, city officials stated that the chambers remain open to all residents under the same access rules.
